Automation flows help you nurture leads, increase engagement, and save time by performing marketing actions automatically—such as sending emails, tagging contacts, or tracking goals. This guide will show you how to create your first automation using triggers, emails, delays, conditions, and goals.
- Go to Marketing > Automations.
- Click + New Automation.
- Name your automation and click Create.
- Click on the Trigger block at the top.
- Click + Add New Trigger.
- Choose one of the available triggers, such as:
- When a user joins a list
- When a tag is added
- When a form is submitted
- Select or create the appropriate list or tag, then click Confirm.
🔁 Tip: You can enable re-entry so users can re-trigger the automation multiple times.
- Click the + button to add a new step.
- Choose Delay and set a time (e.g., 1 hour) before the next step begins.
- Click the + button after the delay.
- Choose Send Email.
- Enter a subject line—use personalization tags like {first_name} to customize.
- Click the email builder button to design your email.
- Choose a template or start from scratch.
- Edit content using the drag-and-drop builder.
- Click Save when finished.
Note: You can preview the email or send a test to yourself before launching.
- Click the + after your email.
- Choose If/Else Rule to split the flow based on user properties like:
- Country
- Tag
- Email activity
- Define the condition (e.g., Country = Australia).
- Add different follow-up actions on each path (send another email, apply tag, unsubscribe, etc.).
- After any action, click + to:
- Apply Tags
- Update User Properties
- Unsubscribe or Delete Contact
- Click Set Goal at the top right of your flow builder.
- Choose what counts as a completed goal:
- Tag added
- Form submitted
- Purchase made
- When the goal is reached, the user exits the flow automatically.
🎯 Why it matters: Goals help avoid over-messaging users who have already taken action.
- Click the Note icon on any step.
- Type your note (e.g., "This is our welcome email").
- You can pin notes to keep them visible for collaboration or reminders.
- Click Save to store your progress.
- Use the toggle at the top to Turn On the automation and make it live.
Once live, you can view:
- How many people entered the flow
- How many completed it
- How many met your goal
- Email open and click rates per step
- Waiting contacts (e.g., stuck in a delay)
